Irregular workers at the GM Korea Bupyeong plant were laid off en masse. Criticism is arising that these workers were driven out of their jobs while the prosecutors’ office was delaying its investigation into the alleged illegal worker dispatch.
According to the GM Korea Bupyeong plant labor union, about 80 irregular workers hired by the in-house subcontractors at the GM Korea Bupyeong plant lost their jobs at the start of the new year.
GM Korea changed its production system from the two-shift system to the single shift system at its Bupyeong plant in September last year, citing declining orders. The number of in-house subcontract workers at the GM Korea Bupyeong plant was about 330. The labor circle has been concerned that about a half of these subcontract workers would lose their jobs because of the change of the shift system.
As it has been concerned, GM Korea issued layoff notices to abut 180 subcontract workers who were hired by the in-house subcontractors whose business contracts with GM Korea expired at the end of last year. About 100 subcontract workers were able to continue to work, as new subcontractors with GK Korea rehired them as their employees. The rest of them were dismissed due to the shutdown of some subcontractors and the change of the shift system.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor(MOEL) submitted its opinion to the Prosecutors’ Office in September last year that 888 irregular workers hired by 17 in-house subcontractors at the GM Korea Bupyeong plant were used illegally. Critics argue that the delayed correction of illegal worker dispatch due to a couple of corroborative investigations instructed by the prosecutors’ office led to the mass layoff of irregular workers at the GM Korea Bupyeong plant.
A GM Korea Bupyeong plant labor union officer said that “the Incheon District Court and the Ministry of Employment and Labor(MOEL) came to a conclusion that the illegal worker dispatch was used at the GM Korea Bupyeong plant, but the prosecutors’ office slowed down its investigation which resulted in the dismissals of the irregular workers.” “The prosecutors’ office has to move to indict the GM Korea management,” he claimed.
The Incheon District Court ruled the case of confirming a worker’s status in favor of the irregular workers at the GM Korea Bupyeong plant who filed a lawsuit against GM Korea in February last year.
