Samsung Heavy Industries(SHI) was named the worst of worst workplace fatality companies due to the tower crane crash last year that claimed six lives of the workers of subcontractor firms. Besides SHI, Hyundai Engineering, GS E&C and Daelim Industrial were named three of the second worst companies with the death toll of five workers, followed by STX O&S, Hyundai Development Company(HDC), KR Industry, and Daelim E&C with five workplace fatalities.
A total of 37 workers died of workplace accidents occurred at those seven companies listed on the worst top 5 and all of them were the workers of subcontractor firms. Concerns are arising about the increasing trend of business outsourcing which steadily aggravates the occurrence of workplace accidents.
