The labor and political circles demanded the reduction of senior managers of GM Korea rather than the closure of GK Korea Gunsan plant and called on the government to conduct joint due diligence on GM Korea's management situation. GM Korea labor union along with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU), Korean Metal Workers' Union(KMWU) and Rep. Kim Jong-hoon of the minor opposition Minjung Party jointly held a press briefing at the National Assembly's press room on the morning of Feb. 20 and denounced "General Motors' unilateral decision on GM Korea Gunsan plant shutdown".

The government is reportedly seeking to conduct due diligence on GM Korea's management, as GM Korea demanded a public fund assistance with the announcement of GM Korea Gunsan plant shutdown plan. It means that the government will assess the real factors caused the financial difficulties that GM Korea appeals for before it decides any financial backing. The labor circle made an allegation that GM Korea has carried out abnormal dealings with General Motors headquarters for the past several years before the abrupt announcement of its Gunsan plant shutdown plan.

It is estimated that in the five years since 2012 the accumulated losses of GM Korea amounted to 2 trillion Korean won(US$ 1.86 billion) and 1.5 trillion Korean won(US$ 1.4 billion) of GM Korea's capital were remitted to the head office during the period.
