"I thought the chemical substance provided the company was a good cleaner, as it was easy and effective to clean out the cabin. However, I found that my hand skins were damaged, when I handled it with bare hands. We have been working in hazardous working conditions without being properly informed of material safety."

On the early morning of Feb. 6, eight lawmakers belonging to the Euljiro Committee of the ruling Democratic Party visited Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport in order to prepare the measures to improve the working conditions of airport workers hired by the subsidiaries of Korean Air and Korea Airport Corporation and its service suppliers, following testimonies on reality given by the workers. In December last year, a regular employee died from overwork at the workplace. An incident was belatedly confirmed that Korean Air cabin cleaning service workers collectively fainted by the inhalation of air disinfectant spray.

It is also revealed that industrial accidents were underreported and injured workers were often urged to come to work instead of proper treatments. In the past 5 year, Korea Airport Corporation, for instance, filed 25 applications for the approval of industrial accidents with the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service, which is one third of the average number of industrial accident applications of the overall industry including white color jobs.

Besides testimonies of the workers, a meeting was also organized with the participation of the management representatives of Incheon International Airport Corporation, Korean Air, Korea Airport Corporation and officials from the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The flights in service handled by Korea Airport Corporation increased by 15.3 percent, compared to the number in 2013 with the subsequent increase of sales and operating profits. However, during the same period, the number of workers reduced by 2.6 percent. Labor unions insisted that "labor cost squeezed by Korea Airport Corporation and its service suppliers was ascribed to the deterioration of working conditions."

The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union made a request for a dialogue with the management representatives of Korean Air and Korea Airport Corporation who attended the meeting with lawmakers but it was declined.

Rep. Lee Hak-young said to the workers that "airport workers die from overwork and work-related stress, but private aviation companies are yet to begin discussion for the improvement of working conditions," and he promised that "starting from today, we will be with you until the issues are actually resolved."
