With 16.4% hike of the minimum hourly wage for 2018 on year which was the record high increase rate, the conservative circle is creating a sense of urgency with emphasis on the burden shouldered by small and medium sized enterprises and micro business owners and demand for different minimum wages paid by occupation and region. Liberty Korea Party chairman Hong Jun-pyo is at the center of minimum wage bashing.

The Minimum Wage Council will convene a plenary meeting on Jan. 31 to discuss the most controversial issue of scope of wages included in calculating minimum wage for the purpose of improving the minimum wage system.
