In June this year, an internet technician was murdered by a customer in Chungju,130 km southeast from Seoul, allegedly for the reason that he was not happy with the service provided by the ill-fated home-visiting technician.

Participants attending the talk demanded in unison that the right to refuse or stop work should be strengthened for mobile workers, taking into consideration of the spatial characteristics of their work environment, that is, private homes which significantly incapacitate the mobile workers from responding to the immediate safety concerns and dangers. Through reviewing the corporate policy in the area of customers service, an appropriate role of big businesses was also raised to protect the safety of mobile workers.

According to the "Action Alliance Seeking for Liability of Conglomerates", most of mobile workers providing services in installing and repairing the internet, cable TV and home appliances were found to have been harassed, abused and intimidated by the customers. The civic group conducted a survey of 796 mobile workers for 21 days since July this year. According to the survey, 77.1 percent(614 persons) responded that they have experienced the moments of dangers in their safety and life at work. They have been verbally abused and physically intimidated, and even placed under serious life-threatening moments by the customers with deadly weapons.

To resolve these customer violence cases at work, only 14.6 percent(82 persons) responded that the company came out to settle the problems. Seemingly in most of the cases it is the mobile workers themselves who deal with the work related safety issues. Otherwise, even in some cases, when the mobile workers reported the customer violence cases to the company, the firm took sides with the assaulting customers on the contrary and demanded the mobile workers to apologize the customers instead.
