After the appointment of Employment and Labor Minister Kim Young-joo - a former trade unionist linked to the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU), attention is now growing on who will become next chairman of the Economic and Social Development Commission(ESDC), the national social dialogue institution in Korea, whose position has been vacant for over a year since June last year when former Chairman Kim Dae-hwan tendered his resignation.

Several names are mentioned as candidates for the position, among whom Moon Sung-hyun is reportedly the most likely figure. Moon Sung-hyun was the former president of the metal union federation(current Korean Metal Workers' Union) of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) and he also served as the chairman of the now-dysfunctional Democratic Labor Party.

President Moon Jae-in made an election pledge during the campaign that he will establish a Korean model of social dialogue system to design the basic plan for the purpose of building a society where labor is respected.
